Breakdown Academy jiu jitsu
Breakdown Academy is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym in Los Angeles, located on Beverly Boulevard near Fairfax and Beverly Grove. We offer adult gi and no-gi training, wrestling for jiu-jitsu, kids classes, and a weekly women’s/queer jiu-jitsu class, all in a room built for thoughtful, consistent training.
We created Breakdown because we wanted the kind of academy we would want to train at: serious about technique, committed to safe and productive training, welcoming and supportive, and relaxed without watering down the jiu-jitsu.
Our coaching emphasizes clean fundamentals, modern grappling, and the small details that make techniques work. We put a lot of thought into how our curriculum is structured. Rather than giving students a series of disconnected moves to memorize, our instructors explain the reasoning behind each position and how techniques connect, helping every student develop a game that works for them.
Our mats are shared by first-day beginners, longtime hobbyists, active competitors, and professional fighters. People come to jiu-jitsu with different backgrounds and different goals, and we don’t believe everyone has to train for the same reason to train together well. Whether you want to compete, challenge yourself, learn something difficult, develop practical skills for self-defense, or find an engaging way to stay active, you’ll be taken seriously and coached as an individual.
The culture of the room matters just as much as the quality of the instruction. We expect people to train safely, respect their partners, and contribute to an environment where everyone can improve. Hard rounds are welcome; ego and carelessness are not.
What has grown from that is a close community of thoughtful, creative people who work hard, support one another, and have a good time on the mats. We’re proud of the level of jiu-jitsu in the room, but we’re even more proud that people genuinely enjoy being part of it.
If you’re looking for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Los Angeles, we invite you to come train with us. Beginners are always welcome, and no previous experience is needed.
